Why Healthcare?

Spyder Trap has had the opportunity to work on digital projects with a multitude of clients in the healthcare industry. Within those partnerships, we’ve discovered numerous digital trends and challenges faced in that industry on a regular basis —trends and challenges that are worth discussing.

This Digital Way Finder panel will be an open dialogue designed to continue moving healthcare innovation forward. The benefits of digital health innovation are clear. It can help decrease costs, increase ease of access and increase quality of care. Once more professionals in the healthcare industry grow comfortable with technology, the more these benefits will be felt. A big part of nurturing that comfort will be to resolve privacy and security concerns within the industry.

Why Attend the Digital Way Finder

If you’re looking for ways to boost brick-and-mortar retail sales via social advertising dollars and content strategy, this case study should get you headed in the right direction. Last week I had the opportunity to speak at Social Media Breakfast about Chamilia; one of Spyder Trap’s favorite clients in the social media space. We’ve had loads of fun working with them and seen great success using a mix of social engagement tactics, content strategy and paid social advertising. But, Chamilia is unique. More or less all of our online efforts are geared towards supporting the brand’s offline and in-store sales, which has posed a unique challenge for our team.

But first, a little background. Chamilia is an up-and-coming jewelry brand based in Minneapolis that sells charms, beads and bracelets. Many of their products carry messages and are bought for highly specific and sentimental reasons. Their shoppers are typically between thirty and sixty years old, the majority of which are women. Moms especially love Chamilia. Which is why this past Mother’s Day, Chamilia tasked Spyder Trap with running a focused social media campaign to generate buzz, increase engagement and provide data-driven results over the most important of holidays for the brand.

So, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Spyder Trap used a mix of strategic planning, Facebook ad targeting, content strategy and creativity to drive organic and paid results. A giveaway with extra paid resources devoted to the target markets of Boston and Philadelphia was huge for the brand during a relatively short campaign period of April 14th-May 11th.

We rolled out Chamilia’s Mother’s Day campaign via Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter using the sentimental hashtag #MemorableMom to both tie all the content together, and keep track of conversation. We asked fans to share stories about their moms or about being a mom in return for being entered to win the giveaway. Through this campaign, the brand earned an exponential amount of new likes and followers through paid post boosting and page like promotions.

In just over three weeks time, Spyder Trap had reached, engaged and captured an audience that had previously taken the brand nearly a year to tap. Over 9,000 Facebook “likes” were obtained during the campaign and impressions topped 11 million. And buzz among current and new followers was huge- the comments shared conveyed the community built during the campaign.

The Minnesota Search Engine Marketing Association has grown to be an exceptional group putting together outstanding search and online marketing events monthly in the Twin Cities. The first MnSearch event of 2014 took place last night and Spyder Trap is proud to be the venue host for all of the 2014 monthly events.

Over 100 attend the January MnSearch event at Spyder Trap.

Search Marketing & Online Marketing Goodness

MnSearch has earned a reputation for putting on valuable monthly events and last night was no exception. Exploring video optimization and marketing, Noah Turner of FRWD, Manny Rivas of aimclear and Carie Otto of Three Deep Marketing gave solid presentations, tips, tools and answers to the attendees.

MnSearch has proven to bring in top local and national online experts over the past few years and last night they even gave notice that a one day search summit with some big names in the industry will happen in 2014. My advice is to become a member, attend events, meet great people and learn a ton!

A Great Minneapolis Event Space

Last night was something that our CEO Mike Rynchek, our CFO Barb Vanags and myself envisioned when we took over the space at 1625 Hennepin Avenue just about 14 months ago. Our main level was built to be open, collaborative and able to host various events.

During the work day you’ll find a few large tables, couches, chairs, stage/steps, bean bags and a standing work station. Anywhere from 2 to 30 of our amazing team members use the space in different ways at one time and we are very fortunate to have this space.

Spyder Trap Office photo by Finance & Commerce staff photographer Bill Klotz.

While we have had about six events already at Spyder Trap, last night’s had a different energy with industry peers and enthusiasts in the building and it was awesome. We are looking forward to 2014 with MnSearch and we welcome you to attend a future event.

Additional Photos From Last Nights Event

You’ll find more photos from last night’s MnSearch event on our Facebook page as well as a few below.

The Spyder Trap team was proud to be at The Nerdery’s Overnight Website Challenge this past weekend. Our team, the Arachnyd Webslingers, was made up of 10 Spyder Trappers, ranging from designers and developers to content specialists and project managers.

We were lucky enough to paired with River Valley Riders, a local non-profit that provides therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with disabilities. Kathy Jo, Susan, and Jonathan were great to work with, and we were excited to put our expertise and knowledge towards helping them!

River Valley Riders wanted a a greater connection to their donors, volunteers, and participants, but their old website was difficult to navigate and didn’t match their brochures and other documents. Needless to say, our work was cutout for us!

In just 24 hours, we were able to build River Valley Riders a new website that was more intuitive, responsive, and matched perfectly with their print materials. More importantly, we built a new electronic scheduling dashboard to help coordinate their volunteers and riders. The team from River Valley Riders was very happy with the end result!

But the River Valley Riders revamp didn’t stop there! The non-profit already had a Facebook page, but we gave them new visuals to implement on their page. Also, we set them up with a new Twitter account and YouTube channel, as well as a new Google account to help manage their newly expanded social media presence. Lastly, I spent some time with Kathy Jo to help educate her on Twitter best practices and answer any of her social media questions.

While there is still some work to do before the full launch, we’re well on our way to completing a functional website with a great design. But the competition is over quite yet, and we need your help.

Head on over to the Nerdery’s Overnight Website Challenge photo album on Facebook, and like our River Valley Riders design! Voting is open until April 2, and we thank you for your support!

The Spyder Trap team is excited to be at The Nerdery’s Overnight Website Challenge for the next 24 hours! We have assembled a (world) wide web of designers and developers, copywriters and content specialists, project managers and creative minds, to form our team—the Arachnyd Webslingers.

Hour 1

Shortly after we arrived the event began at 9 a.m. we found out that our team was paired with local non-profit River Valley Riders (RVR), a therapeutic horseback-riding program. Our charitable, do-goody, make-things-bettery team of Spydermen and Spyderwomen is excited to put our expertise and knowledge towards a great cause!

After introductions with RVR representatives Kathy and Susan, our team dove right in with a discovery meeting to learn as much as we could about their organization, current site and what they envision for their new site. Next step, a deeper dive into brand voice and design of RVR.

Hour 2

After Learning more about River Valley Riders (and they’re a pretty amazing group!), the developers branched off to work their magic while a few of us continued to chat with Kathy and Susan. Together we have already locked down a revised and revamped site map for the new website!

Even better, I had an opportunity to sit down with Kathy and Susan and learn more about the voice of their brand, what makes their organization special and the positive influence they are having on the lives of those involved with the program. I can’t wait to see how these stories influence the website copy I’ll be writing and the designs of the site.

Time to write.

Hour 3

Lunch arrived! Big thank you to Chow Girls for catering amazing sandwiches and cookies. With the countdown clock looming in front of us, the team made it a working lunch and continued to code, write and design. With a finalized site map in place, the new website is in full motion ahead.

Hour 4

While the development team is waiting for designs, they are creating electronic versions of River Valley Riders’ paper forms. Currently, RVR participants can only register for lessons using paper forms and sending them through the mail but, at the launch of the new website, program participants will be able easily access these forms online! This is a really exciting step for RVR to helps streamline the registration process and make the program more easily accessible.

Hour 5

Everyone got a few minutes away from the computer to enjoy the Zoomobile from the Minnesota Zoo. They brought owls, millipedes, and even a creepy crawly mascot for the Arachnyd Webslingers!

Hour 6

We’ve all been hard at work the past hour, especially the designers. Ben and Jeff have spent a lot of time completing wireframes for the site and designing the home page for the new site!

Steve and I have also been busy combing through the existing site content, auditing it and making sure everything is pulled before we take the old site down. There’s still a lot of work left to do, but we’re off to a great start!

Hour 7

With everybody working so hard on so many different projects, Rachel flexed her Project Manager muscle and arranged a quick recap meeting with everyone to make sure we were all on track. It was nice to touch base as a group, and we’re all really excited about where this project is heading!

Hour 8

I’ve been keeping my nose to the grindstone and my fingers typing away reworking content, and everyone else is staying just as busy. Ben and Jeff are almost done with the homepage design, just finishing up some last little tweaks before moving on to other pages. The developers have been surprisingly quiet as they continue to code away, while Steve has been setting up Twitter and YouTube profiles for River Valley Riders!

Fatigue is setting in a little bit, but dinner is almost here and that should help. Most importantly, everyone on the team is still in good spirits!

Hour 9

Dinner arrived, and not a moment too soon! Just as a few of us were slowing down, we had a great burrito bar catered by Qdoba. We had a little fiesta and chatted with Kathy some more, which was a nice break from our computer monitors!

Next up, we’ll be demoing the Concrete5 dashboard and the new River Valley Riders home page for Kathy!

Hour 10

The demo was a smashing success! Ben and Jeff did an amazing job designing the homepage of the website, while the Concrete5 user management system should do wonders for keeping track of all of the volunteers and riders that come through River Valley Riders.

Hour 11

Fresh off of the successful home page and content management demo, the team went right back to make more changes. Because the new site will implement Parallax scrolling and responsive design elements, there’s a lot more work yet to be done. However, the team is working hard and we’re really excited about the direction we’re headed!

Hour 12

We’ve reached the halfway point! While the team hasn’t started stressing quite yet, hitting the twelve-hour mark was definitely an eye opener for several members of the team. The next several should see all of us with our heads down and typing furiously, with a very important recap meeting coming up shortly.

Hour 13

River Valley Riders are now on Twitter, and you can find them @RVRiders! Steve set up the Twitter profile, while Ben designed the custom background and header image to match their new site. Kathy and Susan were both very interested in the potential for Twitter to help reach out to a new audience, so Steve will also be spending time teaching the RVR team about how to best use Twitter.

Hour 14

The team regrouped for our first status meeting since crossing the halfway point. The sense of urgency has started to grow, but we’re far from panicking. Because we decided to do some great things with this project, we had a feeling we’d be rushed!

Hour 15

Many of the design pieces for the new RVR website are coming together. Ben and Jeff have now created the mobile versions of the home page and navigation, as well as desktop and mobile versions of multiple interior pages.

Hour 16

As the minutes and hours tick away, we’re inching closer and closer to getting this River Valley Riders website off the ground. I’ve spent most of the past hour continuing to comb through more content and photos with Rachel and Steve. However, we’ve made a lot of progress and we’re almost in the home stretch!

Hour 17

Losing an hour to Daylight Savings Time was definitely disorienting. While most of the team met for one last status meeting before our final push, I finally succumbed to the sleep deprivation and dozed off long enough for Steve to snap this picture.

Hour 18

Everybody is starting slow down as we’ve all now been awake for over 20 hours. The developers are still hard at work ironing out a few programming wrinkles before the new site goes live!

Hour 19

This update will be short and sweet because we’re all working like crazy finishing everything up! It’s all coming together, though, so we shouldn’t have any trouble delivering a great final product.

Hour 20

We’re officially in the last leg of the competition, with the Arachnyd Webslingers set to present our work to the judges at 7:10am. We’re just finishing up the last couple few pieces of the website before Jeff and Travis show off our hard work!

Hour 21

The tough part is over for us, with Jeff and Travis having successfully presented some of what we’ve been able to accomplish the last 20+ hours. And while the site is close to completion, we’ve decided to hold off a full launch of the new site until it is completely where we’d like it to be.

Mobile is the now and the what’s next for just about every aspect of online and digital marketing. The best chance you have to be a leader in the mobile marketing space is to be deep in the work and take an active part in the conversations taking place on mobile.

Spyder Trap team members have been busy the last month taking part in various mobile conferences across North America. With numerous app projects, mobile websites, responsive web design projects and mobile search campaigns, it was great to take a few days here and there to share our passion, experience and thirst for more knowledge on mobile.

Mobile Conferences Recap

Here is a quick recap of the mobile marketing conferences we took part in the last month.

SCREENS – Toronto, Canada

Web Development Manager Travis Neiderhiser attended SCREENS 2012, a 2-day conference focused on mobile and tablet app development and responsive web design. Travis came back with a ton to share with his development team on HTML5, app analytics, responsive web design and more. He cited Wes Bros as his favorite speaker and session of the conference covering mobile operating system advancements.

Travis had a great time learning and networking with other mobile developers and shared that Crown and Dragon is the beer and wing hotspot in Toronto.

Breaking Development – Dallas, TX

Creative Director Jeff Wagner was Texas bound in September to take part in the Breaking Development conference on mobile web design and mobile development. Jeff really valued the conversation and collaboration format of the event as speakers and attendees mixed opinions and ideas frequently.

Sessions covered mobile content, load time, mobile experience and testing. Want to know the answer of web first or mobile first for design process? Ask Jeff! Jeff cited Lyza Danger Gardner as his favorite speaker with her session addressing “Supporting more, sucking less.”

Jeff claims that he didn’t hit up the social scene at all in his Dallas adventure, but he did share that the Gaylord Texan Hotel was “the bomb.”

SMX East: Local University Advanced – New York, NY

The SMX conference series brings in global online and mobile marketing experts for a 3-day conference in New York City. I had the privilege of being part of the Local University Advanced Workshop at SMX East covering mobile search marketing.

My presentation outlined the massive growth in mobile and local search and what a mobile marketer needs to understand about mobile search rankings and strategies. I’ll cut to the chase for you on this blog post, but local search and paid search are huge winners right now for mobile marketing. With 50% of Google’s mobile searches having local intent and 70% of local search users taking action within an hour, the “mobile search funnel” is huge.

I could hijack the rest of the post with all of the great things in New York I took in during my 3 days there, but one highlight was the “Local Search Last Supper” at rooftop bar Birreria (pictured above).
