1) Announcing the 2014 Local Search Ranking Factors Results

This week Moz announced the seventh annual local search ranking factors results- David Mihm shares his key takeaways including behavioral signals increasing in importance, domain authority on its way up, consistent citations from quality sources, location detection, and more.

2) The Internet of Things: Qualcomm Buys CSR For $2.5 Billion

It’s been a big year for Bluetooth. iBeacon, Bluetooth speakers and a slew of home automation products have hit the market, allowing consumers to remain connected and tap into the Internet of Things. Wireless technology giant Qualcomm purchased CSR this week. To learn what this means for the future of the smart home technology, click here.

3) Google Adds New Features in Tag Manager

Google has enhanced Tag Manager’s capabilities by adding new APIs, more third-party templates, and a new intuitive interface. According to Google, the new Google Tag Manager API will enable users to customize the infrastructure of their websites based on their individual needs. The new API makes it easy to manage user access in bulk and can set permissions for many users at once, or set up role-based permissions and let the API give the right level of access to the right people accordingly. More on Search Engine Watch here.

4) Seth Godin On Content

Whether you’re hunkering down to write site copy, a blog post, pitch materials, a press release, script, or anything else for that matter, there’s no way to avoid the most difficult part: The words. Read more from Seth on the subject of writing here.

5) Facebook Changes Up Ad Campaign Structure

What does this mean for advertisers? Now, you can choose targeting, placement and bid settings at the ad set level- which will help with A/B testing. Drilling down deeper to the ad set level will allow advertisers to test different creative against the same budget, audience, and placement. Companies can also create multiple ads to optimize their creative and make sure that the content is what their specific audience wants to see. Inside Facebook has more.

1) The Future of Storytelling

Some super-savvy creatives met in NYC this week for the third-annual “Future of Storytelling Summit.” The two-day event also featured some cool technology including a 20-sided speaker that captures 3D sound, a choose-your-own-adventure based video creation platform, and a mobile accessory that emits combinations of scents. What will they come up with next, right? Take a look at the highlights.

2) Phablets and Fast Fashion

Fitting the new iPhones into your pocket has become a real challenge for some. Amazingly, the fashion world is already responding. American Eagle, Levi’s, L.L. Bean, H&M, and J. Crew say they are adjusting their designs to accommodate the 4.7 inch tall iPhone 6 and the 5.5 inch tall 6 Plus. Mashable tested out the new iPhones compared to various retailers’ pocket sizes via video this week.

3) Google: Penguin Refresh May Roll Out Next Week

At Search Marketing Expo East, Google Trends Analyst Gary Illyes announced that a major re-write of the Penguin algorithm that took Google almost a year will hopefully launch next week. Google says the update is designed to make both users AND webmasters happy. Complaints from webmasters have been common. Largely, because refreshes have been painfully slow. Penguin 3.0 will support faster refreshes, perhaps on a monthly cycle like Panda, said Illyes. Again, the release may be delayed if tests show issues, but Google is optimistic. Read more from Search Engine Land.

3) Facebook Responds to Real-Name Enforcement

Facebook came under fire in LGBT communities this week after accounts by well-known drag performers were disabled on accounts where they did not use real names. Historically, Facebook has required users to provide a “real” name to prevent bullying, trolling, impersonation, etc. However, Facebook’s chief product officer issued an apology to the LGBT community this week along with a promise that the company will build better tools for flagged accounts. This comes as new social network Ello is causing an LGBT exodus from Facebook due to new anonymity and ad-free features. Read more.

5) Facebook’s Atlas Platform Allows Cross-Device Targeting

On the heels of Facebook shutting down ‘like-gating’, they’ve released what could be the most powerful tool in their history for advertisers. Facebook’s cross-device targeting ad platform will allows advertisers gain more eyeballs and be smarter with their ads. In their words, this update is, “game-changing in our ability to understand the consumer journey and correctly value and budget our mobile ads efforts.” Read more here.

Check back for weekly news on all things digital, and by all means tweet us @Spyder_Trap to share what you’re excited about in the world of digital marketing and technology.

1) 65% of Smartphone Users NOT Downloading Apps

Type Of App & Popularity

In 2008, downloading apps was all the rage. Six years later, this may no longer be the case. A recent study from ComScore showed that seven percent of all users account for nearly half of all downloads. Despite the lack of downloads, the study also revealed that mobile web and app usage accounts for sixty percent of time spent browsing. This means U.S. consumers are spending the majority of their time consuming digital media via mobile applications. Check out this GigaOm article to learn more, or read on at TechCrunch for a different take.

2) Scientists Develop Tiny Vapor Sensor That Can Smell Diabetes

In a recent study out from the University Of Michigan, scientists have shown that a small wearable sensor can pick up on highly specific biomarkers that point to diseases. This development could have an enormous impact on the wearables market, a few years down the line. Sherman Fan, professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan states, “Each of these diseases has its own biomarkers that the device would be able to sense. For diabetes, acetone is a marker, for example.” Pretty amazing stuff. Read the full story here.

3) OS X Yosemite Public Beta – PREVIEW

In case you missed it last month, Apple’s new operating system dubbed, “Yosemite” was released to beta users. This week, Apple has released a second Beta version of the new software. If you’d like to give it a try, Apple is still taking Beta requests. Ars Technica offers a nice summary of major feature updates included in the first round of Beta, which you can read about here.

4) Facebook Update: No More “Like-Gates”

That’s right. You can no longer require a customer ‘Like’ your page in order to enter a sweepstakes, have access to gated information, or receive a coupon. We’ll just have to work harder and be more relevant in order to gain those coveted likes. Read more here.

5) Cross-Device Tracking Now Available On Facebook

Coming in on the heels of Facebook shutting down the like-gate trend, they have released what could be the most powerful tool in their history for advertisers. Facebook’s cross-tracking tool is, “game-changing in our ability to understand the consumer journey and correctly value and budget our mobile ads efforts.” Read more here.

1. Biotech On The Rise

2014 will bear witness to a spike in biotech devices and applications that will help us better understand what’s going on within our bodies. Just look to the emergence of smartpills, personal DNA ancestry, smart food tracking , sleep cycle monitoring and the rise of smart watches for evidence.

2. Connected Technology

Smartphones are fast becoming our day-to-day remote controls. From smarter homes and connected cars to wearable tech devices, 2014 will see the adoption of many more connected technologies. The list of products like Pebble Steel , Nest, Belkin WeMo , Kevo and Viper will only grow longer this year.

3. Mobile Traffic To Eclipse Desktop

In 2014, mobile traffic in the US will finally overtake desktop browsing. As you may already know, ecommerce is leading the way in this mobile trend. As a result, we’ll see significant rise in mobile wallet applications including Google Wallet, Apple Passbook, LifeLock Wallet as well as the continued adoption and widespread use of Near-Field Communication and Bluetooth 4.0 applications. Recent credit card leaks will continue to stoke security fears, which will slow full consumer adoption.

4. “Mobile First” Finally Takes Hold

As a result of increased mobile traffic, we’ll see organizations finally embracing a “mobile-first” attitude. Likewise in 2014, just about everyone will adopt responsive web design as the new standard. Making mobile-friendly sites optimized for KPI’s is especially important for your mobile ad spend. Check out this site for proof (which went from an 86% to 1.5% bounce rate). If that doesn’t shake your boots, you’re probably still using a pager.

5. Contemplative Computing

This term has been floating around the blogosphere for years. 2014 is the year we’ll see it come to life in the form of applications and ideas that – instead of distracting us – focus our attention on the things we care about most. Look to products like Concentrate , Self Control , OmmWriter and Dejal for a peek at how our operating systems will shift in the coming years to favor productivity over multitasking.

6. Beacons Galore

During 2014 we will see a significant rise in applications that rely on beacons (low-cost transmitters that operate via Bluetooth technology). Look for innovations in retail, healthcare and home appliances. Keep an eye on Apple’s iBeacon, Estimote, Gimbal beacon, Swirl networks and PayPal’s beacon.

7. Disappearing Screens

2013 was the year innovators tried to get Google Glass, voice control, gesture-based gaming and virtual reality off the ground. 2014 is the year when many of these ideas will gain adoption. Innovations to watch include Oculus Rift, Leap Motion, Meta Glasses, as well as some of these wearables.

8. Local Services Delivered Via Apps

Smartphone apps and local services have been converging faster than ever. 2014 will see an incredible growth in food ordering, car rental, taxi services as well as home services ordered via smartphone application. Keep an eye on Uber, Seamless, Lyft, Airbnb, Hotel Tonight and TaskRabbit. Overall, we’ll see more and more local services handled digitally.

9. Context & Local Targeting Converge

2014 will be the year local targeting functionality reaches the masses. And players besides Foursquare will find success. By honing in on our exact location and habits, applications will offer us deals, reminders, contextual data and services to further simplify (or complicate) our lives. Look to mobile apps like Google Now, Vayable, Tindr, Banjo, Circle and, of course, Twitter and Facebook to push the envelope in this space.

10. Paid Search Takeover

In 2013, huge changes happened in the search world. Facebook and Google made significant algorithm updates – both favoring paid ads over organic content. In 2014, this trend will continue. Expect intense paid advertising competition in social media. Same goes for Google, Yahoo and Bing. As companies scramble to fill the void left by their collective organic nosedive, things will get more competitive in the paid space. We can also expect increased ads seen across Google+, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

11. Continued Video Growth

The online explosion of video shows no sign of slowing. In 2013, marketers tried to get shoppable video off the ground, advertisers flooded YouTube with pre-roll, Vine burst onto the scene and social media followed suit with a slew of video-friendly features. You can expect more of the same this year. Expect also to see a significant rise in microvideo platforms and content proliferating throughout the year.

12. Hashtag Fatigue

The hashtag is an effective way to queue in on and start conversations with people across the world. In the last two years, consumer sentiment is leaning toward hashtag fatigue, while brands on the other hand are lining up in droves, begging to join and start conversations. Sit back and watch as some brands nail the hashtag game and others miss the boat entirely. We predict most companies will find themselves backing out of the hashtag game entirely by the end of 2014.

13. Expiration Dates On Social Content

Facebook has lost ground among teens in the last year due to its poor handling of privacy issues. And kids certainly don’t want to be on the same social network as their grandparents. In addition, 2013 was the year of Wiki Leaks, an NSA conspiracy and growing skepticism among consumers toward tech giants. As a result, you can expect to see an increase in products catering to user privacy in 2014. Check out SnapChat, Glide, and BackPeddle for a peek at the coming onslaught of expiring social content services.

14. The Year of Subscription Everything

Customers won’t pay for one movie when they can get a month’s worth of movie viewing for the same price. The trend that has already taken hold with Netflix and Spotify is soon to wash over a variety of industries. This same model is already drastically changing consumer purchase habits in books, education and audiobooks. You can even get high-end monthly meat delivery via Carnivore Club AND monthly man goods via Bespoke Post. More subscription services will certainly follow suit.

There’s been much discussion and excitement surrounding virtual reality, but little real action taken. To date, the barrier has largely been the high cost. Big companies can play with the technology, because they can afford it. Luckily, this is no longer the case. We are particularly excited about the Oculus VR developer kit and Atheer goggles. For just a few hundred bucks, developers can start tinkering with this awesome technology. What are you getting for Christmas?

2) 2014 Search Manifesto

Check out these insights from Jim Yu of searchenginewatch.com on how what to expect, and how to prepare your SEO strategy for 2014. Solid stuff. Read more here.

3) Facebook Likes & Shares Don’t Impact Google Rankings

A recent study confirmed that Facebook likes and shares aren’t impacting Google search rankings. In fact, it appears Google isn’t using likes to discover, index, or rank content at all. The takeaway here (from an SEO perspective) is that marketers don’t need to worry about sharing every bit of content on Facebook in hopes of ranking higher in Google. Click here to read more.

4) Users Not So Excited About Parallax

The first real study of this popular web design style suggests it’s not as mind-blowing to users as it is to the designers and web developers so bent on using it everywhere. In fact, some users even found it disorienting. A reminder to developers and designers everywhere: Don’t use a style or technology for it’s own sake. Read more here.

5) Instagram Ads

Instagram released a report this week on how their first ad clients fared with initial campaigns. Ads rolled out November 1st for Instagram featuring Ben & Jerry’s and Levi’s. It looks like early efforts were effective. Expect to see more ads in your Instagram feeds this spring. Read full post here.

6) Shazaam Adds Auto Music & TV Recognition to iPhone App

Instead of pushing a button, this new feature allows users to keep Shazam running in the background where it will automatically recognize songs on the radio and shows on TV, even when you’re using other apps or have your phone locked. Read more here.

Check out this collection of cubicles and small workspaces across the world. Is your office this awesome? Click here to view.

2) Leaked Pitch Deck Reveals Facebook’s Plans To Steal YouTube and TV Ad Dollars

A deck was recently leaked outlining Facebook’s goals surrounding video ads. The deck was sent to Preferred Marketing Developer partners and explained how best to sell Facebook video ads to their clients. The deck outlined how Facebook can offer superior reach and specific targeting. It’s interesting to see Facebook wade so deeply into the video ad space. Read more here.

3) Google Currently Testing Ads in Knowledge Graph

Google’s been testing and optimizing ads within Knowledge Graph. If you are unaware, Knowledge Graph is the box populated with topic-based content that shows up to the right of the search query field. It’ll be interesting to see how this gets rolled out. Check out the post for more details.

4) Microsoft & Apple Using “Ancient” Patents To Sue Time Warner & Cisco

The patent war continues! As you might already know, the Supreme Court is soon to rule on whether specific types of software and code are, or aren’t legally patentable. It appears Microsoft and Apple are trying to squeeze as much money out of the patent wars as possible, before this happens. Read more here.

5) New Data Reveals Majority Of Retweets Happening After Work Hours

Social media marketers know all too well that Twitter activity is highest at midday during the week. A recent report has turned this fact on its head, revealing that most re-tweets happen after work hours and on Sundays. How will this impact your social strategy? Read more here.

6) A Smartphone Game You Can Smell

Pop Secret has released a game that emits the scent of buttered popcorn as users play the game. Useful? No. Is there a potential market in scented smartphone applications? Definitely. I sense a travel app that offers destination smells on the horizon. Read more about the Pop Secret game here.

7) Top 5 Health Innovations of the Week

At Spyder Trap, we have great respect for innovation in the healthcare industry (we might just have a few clients in this space). Check out the following link for some awesome stuff: Glasses that allow nurses to see veins through the skin, fitness apparel that tracks health, personality-responsive rooms at work, bracelets that turn sign language into spoken work and bees that can smell cancer. Pretty amazing stuff. Read more.

8) Cart Abandonment: How Much Money Did Retailers Lose Out On in 2013?

$1.79 Trillion dollars – This is the estimated dollar amount lost due to shopping cart abandonment this year alone. 67% of total user abandonments come from all devices, including desktops. The number of abandonment for mobile is estimated to be much higher, at 97%. Look for tips, tricks and best practices for closing the gap on total number of cart abandonments in this handy-dandy infograph.

Social media marketing boils down to one principle: Adaptability.

Whether it’s adjusting strategy during a Twitter campaign or developing a strategy for an entirely new social platform, the online marketing landscape is constantly being reformed and reshaped.

There is no better microcosm of this constant change than Facebook, which has once again updated one of its key components with an overhauled News Feed. To sum up, there are 5 key differences from the current version:

The News Ticker has been removed

Consistency between desktops and mobile devices

Ability to drill down into content-specific sub-feeds

Larger photos with more immersive photo albums

Extended preview text on shared links

What does this mean?

To find out what these changes might mean for brands, I asked several Online Marketing team members for their insight:

Daniel Hollerung, Search Marketing Manager

“With the announced changes, you can imagine that Bing will use this opportunity to display relevant information from Facebook friends when you conduct a search. It will likely have the same layout and design elements in the search results as it does on Facebook, unifying the look and design.

This will be another indication that universal search results coupled with attractive visual features reach a larger audience and improve conversation whether you’re on the desktop, tablet or mobile platform.”

Cory Vandenberghe, Social Media Manager

“On a personal level I’ve noticed some of the best content in my current news feed comes from Instagram, so larger images will be a great addition. On a downside, I’ve noticed more meme’s and viral videos and those will also be amplified. If only more people knew about Tumblr.

On a professional level brands will have to put an even greater emphasis on creating compelling content, especially compelling visual content. The larger brands like Red Bull, Oreos, Dr. Pepper etc. will continue to create fun, creative, visual content. I’m concerned the smaller brands or businesses that currently struggle producing content, are going to fall even further behind. Their content will begin to stand out (negatively) like the Canadian Tuxedo at a Black Tie affair.”

Nate Knox, Search Marketer

“The announcement conveniently avoided addressing the impact on ads, but after seeing the news and reading preliminary thoughts from others, the main curve ball I see is going to be handling the segmentation. While there should be greater relevancy for advertisers to reach very niche audiences (e.g. Activision will be able to reach Gamers even more granularly when reaching the new segment in the newsfeed), reaching people in their own newsfeed will probably grow more competitive and expensive.

Sure, users will be able to see ‘only friend updates’ or updates from brands/companies in another section, but despite the newsfeed revamp, ads will obviously not exclusively go anywhere else as they are the primary source of revenue. Should Facebook be foolish enough to exclude ads from the friends only newsfeed section, advertisers will pull out quickly.”

Where do we go from here?

Until these changes go into effect for all Facebook users, brands and marketers should continue to operate as they always have. However, all of these changes seem to point towards the common thread of content quality.

Brands will now have much more visual real estate to work with, allowing for more creativity with the imagery or link previews. More creative visuals will in turn provide more reason for users to pay attention to brand content in the new content-specific feeds.

For better or worse, the new News Feed is inevitable. And although the overall consensus seems to be mostly positive, this still means that it is up to brand marketers to adapt to the latest Facebook overhaul.

What are your initial thoughts on the updated News Feed? Let us know in the comments below!

Facebook advertising has taken a lot of criticism the past few weeks in the wake of two particular articles. First, General Motors’ announced that they would no longer be advertising on Facebook due to poor returns. To make matters worse, a new study from Greenlight surfaced, highlighting the finding that 44% of survey respondents never click Facebook ads.

However, despite the recent negativity, advertising on Facebook is still an important part of online marketing. For those still on the fence, we’ve put together 3 reasons why you should use Facebook ads.

1. Strength of the Facebook Audience

While the media has turned the Greenlight survey into an indictment of the Facebook advertising audience, a closer look at the statistics actually strengthens the argument for using Facebook ads.

The survey found that 31% of the respondents rarely click ads, 3% regularly click ads, and 10% often click ads.

This means that although 44% never click Facebook ads, the amount of respondents who do click ads is also 44%.

When examining the audience numbers, it all comes down to whether you view the glass as half-full or half-empty. Either way, the potential market is still massive, shifting the focus from if you should advertise on Facebook to how you should advertise on Facebook.

2. Goal of Facebook Ads

As with any advertising initiative, whether it’s online or traditional, there needs to be a goal in mind. What are you looking to accomplish with your ads?

Facebook ads are best served as community building tools for your Facebook page, meaning you don’t have to rely on the Facebook ads to send people directly to your website.

Instead, bolster your Facebook page to make users want to visit your website based on the positive social media experience.

3. Quality of Facebook Ads

Advertising on Facebook is similar to other forms of online marketing in that the ads need to be optimized. The ads not only need to be targeted to a specific demographic, but those ads need to link to websites, pages, or apps that are relevant to what that targeted demographic is interested in.

You cannot simply throw money into Facebook advertising and expect success. However, if you take the time to implement a strategy with your Facebook advertising, the benefits of this more targeted audience is huge.

This is the second post in a series on the switch to Facebook Timeline. Read the first post.

Last week, Liz discussed the first steps businesses need to make before this Friday’s switch to the new brand page format. But once you’ve uploaded your cover photo and added pictures for your Facebook tabs, where do you go from there?

After taking those initial steps, there are two tactics you should consider as you move forward with your Facebook strategy.

2 Biggest Facebook Timeline Opportunities After The Switch

1. Highlighting Posts
While consistently producing new content is still crucial, Facebook will now allow you to highlight posts. Highlighting a post will pin it to the top of your brand page’s feed for 7 days.

Highlighting a post also increases its size, and will stretch the post across the 843-pixel space on the Facebook page, instead of the post being relegated to one of the two columns on the feed.

From a strategic standpoint, this will let you call out important posts without burying it in your feed with newer content. For example, if you’re running a contest on Facebook, you can highlight a post directing people to the promotion so anyone who visits your page during the next 7 days will see that post right away.

Of course, highlight posts in moderation; otherwise you will limit the visibility of any new content that you post during that period.

2. Build Out The Timeline
An even bigger opportunity than highlighting posts, however, is the timeline feature, which allows brands to add historical content to show how their company was formed and how it evolved in the pre-Facebook days.

The possibilities of what that content could be are endless, whether it’s old advertisements, pictures of the product through the years, or old news links about the brand. Coca-Cola has done an especially good job of building their timeline, and is a great example to follow.

There are other benefits to building out the timeline as well. First, I’m starting to see Facebook contests that utilize the timeline. Fanta is currently running a promotion on their page that has people search through their timeline and “like” certain photos.

As more brands build out their timelines, promotions like this will become more and more commonplace. In fact, I could easily see these timeline contests overtaking photo submission contests as the go-to promotion on Facebook by this time next year.

Secondly, the timeline will give you additional material to add to your overall content mix. People like the nostalgia factor with brands, and telling the story of your brand is a good way to engage those users.

Facebook’s shift to Timeline solidifies the social network’s goal to be more than just a broadcasting platform or a conversation piece between friends. Facebook wants to be a scrapbook of person’s life; a digital record of what’s important to them on a personal level.

Brands can, and should, take this to heart with their Facebook strategy from now on. All of these changes may be a huge shift, but it’s also a huge opportunity to step back and reevaluate your social strategy.

This is the first post in a series on the switch to Facebook Timeline. Also read post two.

Facebook alerted Facebook Page Managers earlier this month that we are finally going to receive Facebook Timeline for Pages. Those brand pages that have not made the switch by March 30, 2012 will automatically be switched to Timeline.

I will admit—I thought it would take them longer, but as a social strategist and social media fan, I am very excited about this.

We are already seeing creative use of Facebook Timeline from brands. Coca-Cola is sharing its rich history through vivid images and memories from fans, while Red Bull has already enacted a Facebook Timeline contest to promote its Timeline. This is only the beginning of creative uses of Facebook Timeline as an engagement portal for brands.

The Switch To Timeline

This change is potentially a big hit to some brands though—especially smaller brands without a full social media team to fill out Timeline history, determine strategy and engage with fans everyday.

Regardless, if you are a marketer using Facebook, there are things you have to know about this switch. Gone are the days when you can post something and walk away. Facebook Timeline is a vehicle through which you can tell your brand story and communicate with customers (who are often your BEST customers).

Are you a Facebook Page Manager who is unsure what this switch means (or what you absolutely need to know)? We wanted to offer some quick tips to help.

3 Facebook Timeline Tips For Your Switch

1. Add a Cover Image
Your cover image is the first thing Facebook users see when they land on your page. This image should represent your brand. It is 850 x 315 pixels, by far the largest visual real estate Facebook has ever given to brand pages. This is really the only thing you need in place to make the switch to Timeline.

2. Facebook Tabs Have A New Home
No longer will your Facebook tabs show up on the left hand navigation—now they are located to the bottom right of your Cover Image at the top of your page. You will see your Photos, Page Likes and then additional boxes based on the existing tabs you have.

If you used to require non-fans to land on your custom tab, all users will now land on your Timeline. This makes the visual in that Cover Image even more important. Note that it goes against Facebook policy to add marketing messages in the cover image (i.e. an arrow and request for users to “like” the page), so it should truly be a visual representation of your brand. Get creative!

When you switch, if your tabs are showing up with an image of a gear, reach out to the developer of your tab to ensure they upload a custom logo or icon for each one.

3. Edgerank Requires Engaging Content
If you still have not created a content strategy to tell your brand story on Facebook, now it is more important than ever. Facebook has updated Edgerank (its algorithm for the Newsfeed), requiring brands to produce better content in order to get any coverage in users’ Newsfeeds.

Facebook’s algorithm requires that fans engage with your post, whether they like, comment, share, click-on your post or click-thru your link. So, push the push-only mentality out the door.

Consider Facebook to be a channel where you can share news, get feedback, give tips and tricks that only you will know, and genuinely include them in your process. Make your Facebook customer part of your planning, give fans extra offers because they “liked” you, and genuinely show them appreciation for being connected.

We will continue watching this switch happen and will update with any other considerations to keep in mind. All in all, now is a great time to refresh your strategy on Facebook and reconnect with your customers.

What makes you excited about Facebook Timeline?
