1) 65% of Smartphone Users NOT Downloading Apps

In 2008, downloading apps was all the rage. Six years later, this may no longer be the case. A recent study from ComScore showed that seven percent of all users account for nearly half of all downloads. Despite the lack of downloads, the study also revealed that mobile web and app usage accounts for sixty percent of time spent browsing. This means U.S. consumers are spending the majority of their time consuming digital media via mobile applications. Check out this GigaOm article to learn more, or read on at TechCrunch for a different take. 

2) Scientists Develop Tiny Vapor Sensor That Can Smell Diabetes

In a recent study out from the University Of Michigan, scientists have shown that a small wearable sensor can pick up on highly specific biomarkers that point to diseases. This development could have an enormous impact on the wearables market, a few years down the line. Sherman Fan, professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan states, “Each of these diseases has its own biomarkers that the device would be able to sense. For diabetes, acetone is a marker, for example.” Pretty amazing stuff. Read the full story here. 

3) OS X Yosemite Public Beta – PREVIEW

In case you missed it last month, Apple’s new operating system dubbed, “Yosemite” was released to beta users. This week, Apple has released a second Beta version of the new software. If you’d like to give it a try, Apple is still taking Beta requests. Ars Technica offers a nice summary of major feature updates included in the first round of Beta, which you can read about here. 

4) Facebook Update: No More “Like-Gates”

That’s right. You can no longer require a customer ‘Like’ your page in order to enter a sweepstakes, have access to gated information, or receive a coupon. We’ll just have to work harder and be more relevant in order to gain those coveted likes. Read more here.

5) Cross-Device Tracking Now Available On Facebook

Coming in on the heels of Facebook shutting down the like-gate trend, they have released what could be the most powerful tool in their history for advertisers. Facebook’s cross-tracking tool is, “game-changing in our ability to understand the consumer journey and correctly value and budget our mobile ads efforts.” Read more here.
