When I started at Spyder Trap a year ago, I was completely new to the world of digital and to the collaborative and exciting—non-corporate—atmosphere that came along with it. My experience here has made me realize how central company culture is to the way we work. It’s not just a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have.

We have found that by balancing casual social interaction with business, we can facilitate strong teamwork, increase productivity, and bring about more innovative ideas. That’s why we regularly introduce some social excitement into the office, like with our recent Spirit Week.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Spirit Week? I used to have that in Middle School and we would wear pajamas to school and have pizza parties.” And you’re exactly right. It’s a week filled with some fun distractions in and out of the office so we can take a break from the day-to-day work and get to know each other on a more personal level—to hopefully fuel even more collaboration and creativity when we get back to work.

The planning committee wanted to be sure that certain components were a part of this week: a team outing, lots of great food (my favorite part, obviously), and social activities at different times throughout the week. And maybe most importantly, we also wanted to give back to our community by partnering with a local charity.

The week unfolded as follows:

Monday: We kicked off the week by channeling our inner 6-year olds with a cereal bar of Cocoa Puffs, Lucky Charms, and Fruit Loops—you know, the good stuff.

Tuesday: Company-wide bowling competition! (I broke 100, nbd)

Wednesday: An in-office movie night in which we watched a film starring the sister of one of our very own Spyder Trappers. (‘Terror Birds’ – it may or may not win an Oscar)

Thursday: SAINT PATRICK’S DAY. People dressed in green as we sipped mimosas and dove into the Bloody Mary bar. In the afternoon we had our monthly Town Hall meeting, which is a good chance for everyone to get up to speed on company updates and enjoy some good food!

Friday: During our lunch we whipped out some board games and demolished some amazing food from Buca di Beppo. If you’ve ever played MadGab, you can imagine how much harder it is with a mouth full of pasta.

In the mix of all the fun and games, we partnered with Community Health Charities & March of Dimes to make fleece tie blankets, collect donations of personal care items and solicit contributions from our team. For me, this was the best part of Spirit Week. Philanthropic work has been a huge part of my life since I was younger. I was very excited to see a group of awesome people come together to help others and do their part to make a difference.

I know that the Spyder Trap leadership team works hard to make sure we have a great culture and enjoy coming into work every day. Their investment of resources in Spirit Week each year helps our team stay creative and motivated to continue the great work we do. If you’re interested in joining our award winning team, check out our open positions here:

Julie Nelson – Senior Interactive Designer

Where are you coming from?

I live in South Minneapolis with my husband and two kids. I’ve worked in the industry for the past eight years as a UX/UI Designer and most recently worked at Ackmann & Dickenson and The Nerdery.

What’s your role at Spyder Trap?

Senior Interactive Designer. At my core I am a problem solver. I love understanding real world problems and finding ways that I can improve a user’s experience through design.

What brought you to ST?

Creativity and smart people. I heard great things about ST for years and the company has lived up to its reputation. I’m excited to continue to hone my craft and watch the company grow.

What are you hoping to accomplish at ST?

I think the sky’s the limit at ST. I have no doubt that I will learn something new from every individual here and that will allow me to create some fantastic designs.

Where’s your favorite place to hang out in the Twin Cities?

My backyard with family and friends. I love spending time playing with the kids outside, eating great food on our deck, or getting dirty in my garden.

Favorite book, movie, beer/cocktail, or TV show?

My favorite series of books is the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the movies are some of my favorite movies. My favorite cocktail is a gin and tonic with ample amount of fresh limejuice or a nice glass of pinot noir. I just started re-watching the TV show The Wire because it is so good, and one of my all time favorites shows is Alias. I think I was a spy in another lifetime.

Something cool about yourself?

In sixth grade at my school’s track and field day, I set a school record in the shot-put that was held for over 20 years.

Kate Hanson – PHP Developer

Where are you coming from?

I grew up in central Illinois (Champaign-Urbana), and went to school at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. I graduated in 2000 with a BA in technical theatre. For the next few years I did a bunch of different jobs. In late 2006 I had an opportunity to work with a small software development company in Saint Paul called Fisdap. I taught myself on the job to be a PHP developer and have worked for the last 10 years on the Fisdap suite of web applications for Paramedic education.

What’s your role at Spyder Trap?

Web Developer

What brought you to ST?

I want to expand my development knowledge by working on multiple newer projects, while maintaining the autonomy and camaraderie that can be found working with a smaller company.

What are you hoping to accomplish at ST?

I want to implement beautiful web designs by writing well-structured, efficient code on the back-end. I hope to have a lot of fun while I’m at it.

Where’s your favorite place to hang out in the Twin Cities?

Woodloch Stable up in Hugo, MN. That’s where my daughters take riding lessons, and where we board our pony.

Favorite book, movie, beer/cocktail, or TV show?

Book: Anansi Boys, by Neil Gaiman

Movie: Children of Men

Drink: Single malt Scotch

Show: Firefly

Something cool about yourself?

I like to knit and bike and spend time up on the North Shore with my family.

Anything else you’d like the Internet public to know?

I am thrilled to be working at Spyder Trap! Everyone here has been welcoming and fantastic. It is a really great team.

Lindsey Graff – Content Strategist

Where are you coming from?

I’m originally from Rice Lake, WI and moved to Minneapolis in 2008 to attend Augsburg College – haven’t left since! I’ve held several jobs in digital marketing on both the agency and client sides. Most recently, I worked as a digital marketing consultant for a small firm in the North Loop.

What’s your role at Spyder Trap?

Content Strategist

What brought you to ST?

I came to Spyder Trap for two reasons: 1) their smart, expert team who I hope to learn from and grow with, and 2) the challenge and excitement of working with such diverse clients on so many different types of projects.

What are you hoping to accomplish at ST?

Other than world domination, my goals at ST are difficult to explain in one sentence, but if I had to, I’d say I’d like to hone my strategic skills in ways that create measurable results for clients.

Where’s your favorite place to hang out in the Twin Cities?

Tracy’s Saloon in Seward – hands down.

Favorite book, movie, beer/cocktail, or TV show?

Parks & Recreation

Something cool about yourself?

I am:

From Wisconsin, so I love the Packers, Badgers, beer, and cheese

A crazy cat lady but I also LOVE dogs

A news and politics junkie

Traditionally, it hasn’t been the easiest task for women to get ahead in the tech industry. If we’re being honest, the same could be said for most [all] industries, past and present. In 2013, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg published her book Lean In as a framework to inspire and encourage women to become the leaders they are capable of being. Fast-forward to February 2016, and the women of Spyder Trap are taking that message—and the movement that followed—to heart. I chatted with Lead Client Strategist, Sabrina Bolin, about her choice to start a Lean In Circle for her and her colleagues. We get into the origins and inspiration for the group as well as her hopes for what it can become.

<develop=”us”> organizer, Sabrina, and some bikes.

Why did you want to start your own Lean In Circle at Spyder Trap?

You know, one thing that was really interesting that came out during our first meeting was how hard it can be for women to feel confident (especially in an industry that is typically dominated by men). One member described an instance of feeling like they didn’t deserve to feel confident in their work. The entire groups’ jaws DROPPED. This individual is one of the most talented people most of us have worked with—and dammit she deserved to hear it! This is one of the many reasons it is important to have groups that not only support, but also encourage women in this industry.

Personally, as a female in the sales world, not to mention the tech sales world, I’ve come up against my fair share of stereotypes and sought a group that I could lean on to help me through situations that may not resonate with some of my male counterparts.

Why the name <develop=“us”>?

<develop=”us”> is a play on code. Because we are a digital marketing agency as well as a web development shop, we wanted a name that would not only represent our goals, developing ourselves, but also where we come from—the world of technology.

What was the process like starting the group? How was it received in the office/by leadership?

Spyder Trap is incredibly supportive of the group (our CFO is a member!). Mike [Founder and CEO] immediately asked me what I needed in order to get started and then followed up with me when I didn’t have the kick-off meeting scheduled after a week.

What do you hope to accomplish with the Lean In Circle?

Our overarching goal is to empower individuals (women and men) to be in the driver seat of their careers, to Lean In[to] what they want out of their career, not necessarily into what others think their careers should be, and then to support it.

Describe what a typical meeting might look like. Or describe why there isn’t a typical format.

We plan to vary the meetings. I ran the first meeting according to LeanIn.org’s suggestions, but kept it open-ended going forward. I hope that we can run the group more like a co-op than a sole-leader-run-group. It is my hope that each month we can pick a topic and have a topic expert run that meeting. We’ve decided to include a book club component into the group, so our second meeting is going to be a discussion on the book Lean In. Month three could be anything from hosting a public speaking expert who can teach the whole company a thing or two about talking to a crowd, to a more in-depth discussion on Power & Influence – TBD!

How was your first meeting?

Awesome! The LeanIn.Org material is so great. I was a bit nervous about how the group would feel about some of the items that were on the docket for discussion, but everyone was very open to trying, which meant that we all were able to get something out of the meeting.

Are meetings open to the public or just an internal meet up for Spyder Trap’s women?

The Lean In Circle is going to be for Spyder Trap only, but we hope to host a few meet-ups that are open to the Minneapolis community as a whole. We’re also looking to be inclusive, meaning men are welcome to join as well—sometimes. We want to balance being inclusive with keeping meetings a safe place for sharing our experiences and supporting each other.

Are there MN groups or individuals that inspire you? Inspiration elsewhere?

Several. We are very fortunate to live in a community that backs equality and women in tech. Girl Develop It, Team Women MN, as well as the Women’s Club of Minneapolis are all very accessible for events and support. In terms of inspiration beyond Minneapolis, Lenny Letter is a great read.

What’s the coolest thing you can think of that could come out of these meet ups?

Honestly? I don’t have a clue, but I know there is potential for some AMAZING shit. We’re fortunate enough to have EVERY department represented in this group – no joke. Ideally, I’d like to find the time to build something really cool for the women of Minneapolis, whether that’s a new website with marketing for a women’s organization or charity or an app that builds upon our group that allows us to reach beyond the walls of Spyder Trap. More to come on that one too.

On November 5th, we’re shifting gears to another fast growing and popular Minnesota industry: craft brewing. We all know Minnesotans like to partake in a beer or two, and the Twin Cities is fast becoming a top region for craft beer, cider, and liquor. We’re bringing local brewers, taproom owners, and marketers together to talk about the best and worst parts of being in the MN beer community. Before you head over to Spyder Trap to partake in great drinks and conversation, let’s meet our amazing panel!

Jim Watkins, Sociable Cider Werks

Jim Watkins is a former Wall Street trader and current Managing Director of Sociable Cider Werks, a hard cider brewery in Northeast Minneapolis. He and his business partner Wade sparked their friendship as undergrads at Carleton College in Northfield, MN before sharing a small apartment in New York City and then eventually starting Sociable Cider in a garage on Madison St. in NE Minneapolis.

Sam Harriman, Sisyphus Brewing

If you had asked me 10 years ago what I would be doing right now, brewing beer wouldn’t have even been on my radar. I didn’t know beer, I didn’t even like beer. But as I started homebrewing almost 6 years ago, I fell in love with the process that combined so many of my interests and talents. I was pre-med in my undergraduate career and had a love of science, especially microbiology, knowledge of which helps make good beer. When I completed my MBA at Hamline 3 years ago, I decided to take the plunge into owning my own business and doing something I loved. The name of our brewery also allows me to put to use one of my less useful college degrees: philosophy. Our plan for the future of Sisyphus Brewing is to have our identity be known as both a taproom and a comedy club, something we are in the process of working on presently.

Peter Heidorn, LynLake Brewery

Peter spends his days as a Digital Producer for BestBuy.com and nights as the Marketing Guy for LynLake Brewery. Digital and social are his specialties, and he also enjoys chasing down new business, finding new ways to collaborate, and blowing up big ideas. His marketing approach is based on strategic, smarter marketing that encourages engagement and loyalty.

Peter lives in Edina with his wife Bridget and dog Barkley.

As we continue to grow as a digital marketing agency, the best benefit is that we get to bring on even more talented team members. We don’t want to keep them all to ourselves, so get to know three of our newest team members and then maybe connect with us about working here too!

Where are you coming from?
I started writing applications for Apple products for fun many years ago while doing front-end web development professionally. When the App Store was launched and business started to embrace a mobile world, a need for seasoned iOS developers arose and it was an easy choice.

What’s your role at Spyder Trap?
I’m working on developing apps specifically for iOS Devices. From iPhone and iPad to Apple Watch — and whatever they come up with in the future.

What brought you to Spyder Trap?
The breadth of talent here, across the entire digital space. I think it will be a great place to grow.

What are you hoping to accomplish at Spyder Trap?
To build great applications and get better at what I do.

Where’s your favorite place to hang out in Twin Cities?
Evenings in St. Paul on Wild game night. When it’s not miserably cold, of course.

Favorite book, movie, beer/cocktail, or TV show?
My favorite book is The Selfish Gene and my favorite cocktail is called the Pain Killer, which originated on the smaller British Virgin Islands — one of my favorite places to be.

Something cool about yourself?
My favorite hobby is keeping saltwater reef aquariums. It’s the perfect combination of a challenging scientific exercise and artistic outlet.

Annie Engmark – Project management

Where are you coming from?
Born and raised in the Twin Cities. Came from Code42, where I worked as the localization specialist.

What’s your role at Spyder Trap?
Project Manager. Super excited to be working with internal and external teams, facilitating communication that results in awesome digital projects.

What brought you to Spyder Trap?
The combination of creative and code is really intriguing to me. Plus, I love project management and ST is a young, dynamic company that I’m looking forward to growing with.

What are you hoping to accomplish at Spyder Trap?
I am anxious to learn more about all sorts of digital marketing and the variety of projects we take on with our clients. I also look forward to fostering strong client relationships and making our processes even more efficient.

Where’s your favorite place to hang out in Twin Cities?
I love walking around the lakes in Minneapolis — Lake of the Isles is my fave.

Favorite book, movie, beer/cocktail, or TV show?

Favorite book: anything by Barbra Kingsolver

Favorite movie: the one I’ve probably seen the most and still enjoy is Almost Famous

Favorite beer/cocktail: depends on the season…But bubbles for any and all occasions!

Favorite TV shows: Dateline, the Mindy project, or most things on HGTV

Something cool about yourself?
Soup is my favorite thing to cook — I’m excited it’s becoming soup-making season! I’m on the board for Clojure Bridge MN, a non-profit organization that offers a unique experience for women and gender queer individuals to learn a new programming language.

Jon Lenz – Client Strategy

Where are you coming from?
I grew up in the Twin Cities. I attended the U of M and received a B.A. In communications and also competed as a hurdler on the track and field team. I’ve spent the last 7 years in a variety of integrated marketing and communications roles with BMW / Penske Automotive Group, ATK and HNI Corporation. I also stay busy as a marketing + communications consultant and volunteering with IABC Minnesota. Oh yea, and I’ll be graduating with my Master in Business Communication from the Opus College of Business at St. Thomas in May.

What’s your role at Spyder Trap?
I’m a client strategist. I work with new and existing clients to identify and isolate strategies to grow revenue, increase conversions or any other strategy or goal. I focus on being a consultative advisor; building credibility with clients, demonstrating value and working to further partner to meet and exceed goals.

What brought you to Spyder Trap?
The opportunity to use my broad marketing and communications acumen to help clients reach their goals and objectives, the culture and leadership team, and the ability to grow with the team.

What are you hoping to accomplish at Spyder Trap?
Everything. Grow our team and capabilities, improve internal marketing + communication efforts, and continue to build our reputation as the experts in digital in this market.

Where’s your favorite place to hang out in Twin Cities?
I’m an outdoorsman. When time permits, a trip to a local-ish winery with my wife for some tasting and noshing, followed by a hike, is a go-to day trip. Otherwise, my wife and I are big foodies, so grabbing anything to eat (sushi, new american or otherwise) and walking around the Guthrie and Mill City ruins is a solid fallback plan.

Favorite book, movie, beer/cocktail, or TV show?
I’m a red wine guy. A hearty cab does it for me. The wife and I enjoy Anthony Bourdain—both on Bravo and CNN. It’s culturally stimulating, and full of amazing travel, and food / wine experiences.

Something cool about yourself?
I’m an athlete, love exploring and am outdoors as much as possible. This trio can create some pretty interesting adventures; from planning a bit too long of a canoe trip with my wife in the BWCA, to running sprint workouts with some old friends and quickly realizing we are now a little older, too.

I am humbled to have been named a finalist in the healthcare champion category, but more importantly our team was recognized in the software and web application category. Along with the Yale School of Public Health and UnitedHealth Group, our team designed a web application with the lofty goal of decreasing preterm births in the United States. It’s that goal that pushed us to create an innovative and effective platform for expecting mothers—an award is just a nice reflection of the hard work our production team puts in on a daily basis for our clients.

A history of serving the healthcare community

While this recognition is specific to our recent work, Spyder Trap has been collaborating with healthcare partners since its founding in 2008. We’ve put in significant investment in making sure we can deliver our healthcare clients with the highest quality service. Every year we invest in becoming HiTRUST certified—a framework that allows us to provide trusted services for organizations with protected data, like personal health information. It’s a big investment that not a lot of agencies make, but we believe it’s worth it to provide our clients with the highest level of service possible.

We’re not content with keeping our healthcare expertise to ourselves. We’ve hosted our friends from HCMC, Optum & other healthcare leaders to discuss the future of digital health. We often partner with our neighbors at TreeHouse Health for events on innovation and healthcare entrepreneurship. It’s not enough for us to produce great websites, applications, and marketing strategies—we want to help the Minnesota healthcare community thrive.

Going beyond healthcare

We’re being recognized for our work with the healthcare industry, but we strive to provide the same level of service for every client and industry we work with. Our designers, strategists, and developers build on to industry best practices with their expertise and thirst for reaching new creative heights. Whether they’re building a local, Minneapolis ecommerce site or solving a software gap for a Fortune 500—Spyder Trappers engineer solutions with a balance of function and style.

As we continue towards the end of 2015, we’re going to continue advocating for the Minneapolis healthcare community while expanding our services to national and international partners. We’re also going to continue delivering high-performing solutions to our clients in every industry; providing their users with exceptional digital solutions whether they’re called customers, consumers, or patients. If those things continue to result in awards, we’ll certainly take them.

Why? We want to get to know you and give you a chance to get to know us—and maybe get you a rewarding job out of the experience. This month we’re looking for iOS developers, account executives, and anyone who wants to see why we’re a four-time 100 Best Companies to Work For honoree. Spyder Trap hiring parties and open houses are far from your typical interview process. Come see what makes us different.

Stand Out While Hanging Out

While resumes are important, we realize that candidates are more than just a piece of paper. We also realize that having a party is a lot more fun than reading cover letters. That’s why we open our doors to drink, eat, and chat with potential candidates. Our culture is a big part of who we are at Spyder Trap and this is a way to give you access to that culture. Our hiring parties give you a chance to show us why you’d make a great Spyder Trapper, beyond the bullet points of your resume. It’s a chance to meet the team you would be working with on a personal level—the informal setting will allow you to drive the conversation and let you network on your own terms.

View our current openings

Come Back Again Soon

We’ve been doing hiring parties for a while now, but it’s time to do them even more. Between our growth as a company and how much fun we have at these events, we want to host them more regularly. Check back in often to see when we’re going to open our office up again to anyone who wants to hang out—and wants to potentially work with us. There’s an amazing pool of creative individuals in Minneapolis and we want to provide a place for everyone to come mingle and network. It’s going to be fun and hopefully fruitful.

Stop by on August 6th at 5:00 for our hiring party (especially any iOS developers and account executives) and then keep your eye out for our next open house coming very soon.

7. No amount of stern looks was able to stop this photobomb from happening.

We’re so happy to be among Minnesota’s best companies to work for. For a less visual representation on how we feel about this honor, check out CEO Mike Rynchek’s words on why he thinks we’re a great place to work. We had a lot of fun celebrating, but now it’s time to go back to work…after just one more drink.

As a leader in Minneapolis digital marketing, we’re not strangers to innovating for our clients in areas like responsive web design, local search, and email marketing. Every once in awhile we also find opportunities to innovate in disciplines outside of our core capabilities. A few months ago, our Quality & Process Manager, Scott Storlie identified such an opportunity and took on the challenge of enhancing our project management process through our QuickBase applications. In classic “Spyder Trapper” fashion, he vastly exceeded expectations. His results and innovative approach even earned him a speaking appearance at this year’s Inuit QuickBase Empower 2015 Conference.

The Journey to #Empower2015

Getting invited to speak at a national conference doesn’t happen overnight. Scott identified a potential area of improvement for Spyder Trap after discovering a data integration gap. Scott began mapping out a solution and was fortunate enough to gain access to a beta version of QuickBase Sync, which provided the foundation for Scott to adjust and build upon. He has been integral in helping to develop the finalized feature for Intuit, while at the same time making Spyder Trap more efficient by integrating its project management and accounting systems. He estimates that the enhancement will save 252 hours over the year. With that kind of impact, it is no surprise Intuit wants Scott to share his insights with a national audience.

QuickBase User Conference Details

If you want to see Scott go into detail about his QuickBase expertise, then you need to be in Chicago on May 27th—or you can try asking him nicely next time you see him around Minneapolis.

Empower 2015 is Intuit QuickBase’s national conference which will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, May 26-28. Reasons to attend:

Meet and network with your QuickBase peers

Hone your QuickBase skills by learning from the best!

Get the inside scoop on the latest and greatest QuickBase product development.

If you’re able to attend, make sure to check out Scott and his breakout session “How Spyder Trap Transformed Its Business With QuickBase Sync.” We’re very lucky to learn from him every day, and we’re glad that now everyone else has that opportunity too!
