1. How does a grocery store enhance consumer shopping experiences and build community online?

Twenty years ago, it was easy to identify where shoppers purchased their groceries — from the grocery store or the farmers market, of course. But the dawn of e-commerce brought new opportunities for consumers and thus, more challenges for traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Realizing the need to establish a strong online presence, Minnesota Lakewinds Natural Foods Co-Op asked us to transform their website from a static page to a dynamic, communal hotspot for blogs, recipes, food education, member engagement and store information.

2. What design and content tactics are needed to lead people toward education and exploration?

Lakewinds didn’t just want to provide their customers with a positive trip to the store. They also wanted to provide valuable online experience for customers to explore food and connect with community members who shared similar lifestyle views. The opportunity was to set Lakewinds apart by promoting community-based content and streamlined functionality via responsive web design.

3. Solution: Develop a clean and fresh website that drives local search

Lakewinds Food Co-Op has three stores throughout the Twin Cities metro. We created for them individual location pages with product information, hours, a Google Maps store finder and complete video tour. These store profiles helped drive local search around natural foods, pointing potential new customers to Lakewinds as a new asset.

Users visited 3.14 pages per session for the six months post launch

2

Users spent an average of 2:24 per session for the six months post launch

3

196 new users signed up for Lakewind's newsletter in the six months post launch

4. Outcomes: Boosted natural food awareness and added store value

The moment Spyder Trap launched the new Lakewinds site, traffic skyrocketed. The first month (March 2013) saw only 19,500 pageviews, but by April 2013, pageviews increased 66 percent to nearly 29,000. And users are engaged, too, spending around multiple minutes searching through multiple pages per session. That means more business for Lakewinds and an increased promotion of natural food awareness and healthy-living practices for the community it serves.
