Vegas baby Vegas! CES 2012January 12, 2012

My time at CES was brief but inspiring. As Spyder Trap quickly moves to becoming a leader in the Marketing Technology space, CES provides a crystal ball into new potential platforms we may quickly find ourselves working with.

Focus On The Device

It was clear device integration will be bigger than ever in 2012. Users are becoming accustomed to receiving the same (or similar) content – no matter the device, no matter the location. I can tell you with certainty that the days of developing a website and mobile site/app in a silo are over. Just ask Pandora and they will tell you developing a cohesisive and consistent user experience is key to mass adoption.

At Spyder Trap, we have invested in making sure we are up-to-speed with mainstream devices and platforms (ie. php, iOS, Droid) along with less-mainstream devices such as the Nook and Xbox. These mobile, tablet and gaming devices are the future of digital marketing.

Healthcare and Technology

For the first time (at least in my opinion), health care was a major focus of the convention. Companies like Motorola, with their MOTOACTV solution, understand that technology has a role in health/fitness and are clearly trying to stake their claim. The ear buds track your heartbeat! Really? CES also played host to the Digital Health Summit, which showcased the rapidly evolving landscape of consumer-based health care.

I walked away from CES asking myself the following questions:

  1. 1. Will Microsoft be back next year?
  2. 2. If not, will CES be the same without them?
  3. 3. Will 3D TVs finally take off?

    Why wouldn’t Microsoft return?

There’s a lot of speculation as to the actual reason why. Some say they are trying to follow in the footsteps of Apple by being more secretive with product developments then managing their own launches. (Note Apple does not attend CES. And Microsoft has been borrowing from the tactics of Apple as of late ie. Mobile, Retail etc.) They also may not feel like CES is providing the value they originally saw in past years. Tough to say for sure at this point. Finally, from the sounds of it Steve Ballmer is not convinced they will not be back.

    Time will only tell.
