Social Media, Online Photo Rights, NFC Enabled Phones & More

We discussed a number of great topics that fall into the social media and mobile areas of marketing. Here’s a quick summary of the topics, but you should obviously listen to the podcast in full. ;)

  • Marrying Traditional & Social Media Metrics
We looked at the social media factor in broadcast metrics, if it can stand alone as a medium, and how to derive value from it. Businesses will continue to measure the bottom-line but it is important for companies to keep in mind that social media measures so much more than sales. Learning how to integrate social media with other marketing channels is key to making the overall approach better.
  • Why Phones Are Worse Than DVRs
We also discussed how mobile phones are killing commercials more than DVRs. According to a study done by IPG Media, mobile phones account for 60% of all TV distraction. It can be a big positive for viewers to socialize online during commercials, a great example is American Idol. Being tapped into their online community will help brands drive the actions they want to illicit from viewers.
  • Online Photos & Rights
Online photo sharing sites are popular, growing and have their own rights issues to deal with. Brands will not stop soliciting content to customers unless there are more regulations in place. From a user standpoint, there is a rights issue that still needs to resolved. However, from a brand standpoint, there may be liabilities for organizations who put images on, for instance, Instagram.
  • NFC Enabled Phones & Google
Is Google the right company to produce Near Field Communications (NFC)? Overall Google is well-positioned to produce and foster growth and adoption for NFC. PayPal is a good case for a similar system that created an alternative payment format and is user-friendly. They also have a critical mass going for them. I think NFC’s success hinges upon marketers ability to educate the consumer on its benefits and the provider’s ability to ensure security.  If the consumer can understand how NFC simplifies their life with a secure process, it will be a big win.

Great Experts, Great Time

Overall it was a great experience to take part in with other great social media and technology experts.  As a long time listener of the podcast it was great to participate personally. I’d love to hear your comments or questions from the show.
