There are many different elements that contribute to a great web design. Many clients and prospects are surprised to learn of the elements that rank ahead of an edgy graphic, an awesome photo or cool effect.
One of these important elements is space.
Referred to as both whitespace and negative space, it’s an underutilized best practice in web design.
Whitespace Is Valuable Space
Whitespace is simply the distance between any two objects or elements in your web design and doesn’t have to be white in color at all. This can be between two photos, text and a photo and many other combinations.
Business owners and even designers can fall victim to minimizing space as they feel it’s wasted space. In the need and desire to market, educate and sell, you want to use every pixel you can to try and win a customer. Many over do it and end up with a crowded, lackluster website.
Whitespace is a great element and has many positive impacts on your web design. Here are a few:
- An open design that conveys trust, elegance and professionalism
- Offers proper layout and content structure
- Puts the focus on content and makes it more legible
- Adds to the usability of the website
The green arrows below highlight some of the spacing being used on this design.
Dare I say, that you can’t have too much space? Those words have come out of my mouth many a time to web designers and developers (sorry devs, especially you!).
It’s important to approach your web design or redesign with a focus on good spacing. Let it breathe with the right approach and use of whitespace.
Perhaps you’ll see a little more life in your feedback, traffic and conversions.
