A project manager becomes a project manager because they know how to get things done and they like getting things done. I am not going to beat around the bush, they also tend to want to control everything and this can lead to some occasionally “bossy” or pushy behavior that those people on the project team may find just a little annoying.

Project manager secret: They secretly wish they could complete the project on their own, a project super hero.

Here’s the reality for that project manager, they can’t do it alone. Being a project manager for an online company is 100% teamwork 100% of the time.

To make this work, a successful PM has to learn quickly that he or she cannot just take over the project whenever it isn’t going exactly as planned.

That PM is not a developer, designer, copywriter, search marketing manager and social media expert in addition to being a project manager.

Project Managers Know To Give Their Team Space To Succeed

A successful PM must learn to trust and rely on the skills and talents of one’s team of experts. Even harder than learning to give up control of each element of the project is learning to get the heck out of the way and allow the experts on the team to do their job.

I talk a big game but do I always follow my own advice? Nope! I am still trying to get there and it takes practice. I am in the way all the time so I frequently have to remind myself to trust in my team and give them the space to apply their expertise.

They know what they’re doing and I need to remember that I’m there just to make sure we’re all doing our part together and moving the project in the same direction toward the finish line.
