This is cool as we were just chatting about this a few days ago at your new digs. I started using Twitter sometime around April, 2007 to follow http://twitter.com/ldg as he then had something called "Least Dangerous Game". Every other Saturday, he'd "hide" somewhere in the Twin Cities and tweet out clues to his whereabouts. I never did win but did learn a lot about this area that I wouldn't have otherwise. I came in 2nd once, a few of us then chatted for 20 minutes or so and I met two cool people because of it.

Slowly but surely I became connected with people through Twitter and have a rather low number of connections given how long I've been on it. Personally, I prefer it this way and have met and/or networked with at least 50 or so marketers and other cool people in person because of Twitter, including all of you at SpyderTrap who I consider friends.

My Twitter usage hasn't changed much in two years, but have used search.twitter.com much more for news lately. One person in California I follow tweeted something like "oooh, earthquake going on" a few months ago. Turned out I knew of a minor quake a good hour before CNN reported on it. To me, that's just incredible.

Jason,

I love hearing how your opinion has changed over the past year. I have had the same change in the last few months. I now see how Facebook and Twitter can be completely different medians. It has also been interesting to see how social media has helped me evolve into a leader at my own company. As a recent college graduate, I have become the “expert” in social media at my company. We are still not in the game, but progress has been made. I have professionals with many more years of experience asking me for my opinion and guidance around social media. I still have a lot to learn, but seeing how much progress I’ve made over these past few months is amazing. I look forward to providing more value with every update, post, discussion, etc.

Hey Scott,

Thanks for reading. My answer about my feelings on twitter in an interview with an online marketing agency is definitely one I will tell people as twitter and social media continues to grow. It shows that you need to give things time to develop, and yourself time to learn about and how to use it.

It's amazing how many people I now connect with from twitter, and the number of people I have met from the twitter community. From local people to as far as California, I have made new connections that would not have been possible without twitter.

I am glad that people are getting more comfortable integrating their personality with their twitter updates. Sure, I want to know what people are reading, what they recommend, etc. I also want to know the person behind the recommendation.

Hey Jason, I really like this post. I got to thinking about how my online persona started and where it is now. I think I really got interested in the power of connecting with people on Tumblr and moved to Twitter shortly after. Now, I have a complex web of profiles and sites that create a strong profile of my personality.

Similar to your experience, I'm an eager college grad striving to add value to my online community and much of what I write is of a professional nature. Luckily for me, my desired profession is what I love to do.

I love your answer to the question about Twitter a year ago. At that same time, I don't know what intrigued me about Twitter, but I jumped right in and the appeal has become very obvious.

It is pretty unbelievable what a year can do.
